All You Need to Know About Games on Sui Blockchain

Robert Hoogendoorn

Sui is the new blockchain contender for the games market, attracting both game developers and Web3 gaming enthusiasts. Backed by venture capital, the Sui blockchain ecosystem wants to position itself alongside industry leaders such as Immutable X and Polygon. Let’s dive into the Sui ecosystem, and find out what the top games are.

DappRadar does not track activity on the Sui blockchain yet, but we do like to inform you about this new, developing ecosystem.

What is the Sui blockchain?

The Sui blockchain is a Layer-1 blockchain ecosystem that puts a strong emphasis on Web3 gaming. Sui sets itself apart from the competition by putting a focus on on-chain assets. In addition, these game items can be dynamic NFTs, allowing developers to alter game items as they please without changing anything to the ownership. The network stands out because it scales simply by adding more nodes.

What makes Sui stand out as a gaming blockchain?

  • Sui has a game-first approach, putting emphasis on player experience, engagement and agency
  • The Sui blockchain is object-based, meaning that the ecosystem is optimized to deal with lots of small NFT assets and the ability to alter these items
  • Dynamic game NFTs on Sui allow for game items to change their metadata, and therefore carry a part of the game’s history

What is a dynamic NFT or game item on the Sui blockchain?

Dynamic NFTs or game items allow game developers to alter the metadata or change items without the need to burn or reissue them. This way game items can show new data, and grow within an ecosystem based on game development. Seemingly this is a very attractive proposition for game developers. For example, accomplishments achieved with a specific game item, can be added to that item’s metadata. This can be interesting for legendary weapons, but also for players characters.

Who made the Sui blockchain?

Sui blockchain is being made by Mysten Labs. The company is financially backed by Binancle Labs, Coinbase Ventures, Circle Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and gaming company NCSoft. They raised $300 million led by FTX Ventures in September 2022, followed by another $15 million in November 2022. Since then, Mysten Labs bought back the FTX stake for $96 million after the exchange collapsed earlier this year.

Is Sui compatible with Ethereum and other EVM chains?

No, the Sui blockchain is not compatible with Ethereum or any other EVM blockchains such as BNB Chain or Polygon. It’s also not compatible with Solana.

What companies and developers are building games on Sui?

Among the confirmed game studios building on Sui, there’s Aether Games, Ghost Ivy, Iron Belly Games, Netmarble, ONBUFF x SNK, Orange Comet, Seascape, Talofa Games, Unicorn Labs and many others.

These games are being built on the Sui blockchain

And of course there’s a lot more coming to the Sui Network.

These are the best gaming blockchains

Mysten Labs has positioned itself among the best gaming blockchains on the market, tailored with quality gaming experiences in mind. Sui Network is not compatible with Ethereum, and according to the team at Mysten Labs that’s not required. Mysten Labs built their own blockchain that tailors the needs of – what they believe – is the future of Web3 gaming.

However, there are more gaming blockchains on the market. These are the best ones tracked by DappRadar:

  • Immutable X – created by Immutable, and home to games such as Illuvium, Gods Unchained, Ember Sword and Cross the Ages.
  • Polygon – recently introduced zk-rollups in collaboration with Immutable, and already home to projects like The Sandbox, Pixels, Oath of Peak, Crazy Defense Heroes, Palnet Mojo and many more.
  • WAX – an ecosystem famous for its easy onboarding, offers games such as Alien Worlds, Wombat Dungeon Master, Farming Tales, Dawn of Victory and more.
