What is a digital wallet?

A digital wallet, just like your traditional leather wallet, in blockchain terms, is an interface that allows you to store your private key and interact with multiple digital ledgers depending on the wallet type.

Each public blockchain has its wallet, and as the industry evolves, more and more wallets are multi-chain.

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is the most famous crypto wallet in the Web3 space. The objective of its creators back in 2016 was to make ether (ETH) transactions simple and as intuitive as possible. The project grew much more than that and is today one of the biggest Web3 companies.

MetaMask started as an Ethereum wallet, but today it’s a multichain gateway. You can connect to all major EVM networks like Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, zkSync, Linea, and Base. In May 2025, MetaMask added native Solana support, so you can now send, receive, and explore Solana dapps directly from your wallet.

Full Bitcoin support is also on the roadmap, which will make MetaMask one of the most universal wallets in Web3. And with Snaps, you can already extend your wallet to non-EVM blockchains such as NEAR, Cosmos, Tezos, and Cardano.

It’s a browser wallet, meaning it’s online, easy to access, free to use, and generally user-friendly. Moreover, through MetaMask, you can also interact and use various Ethereum dapps easily – and you can also do it from your mobile app on iOS and Android devices.

How does MetaMask work?

Since their overall goal is to promote adoption, MetaMask is self-hosted, and its plugin is available for different browsers. You simply have to add an extension to your browser, whether it’s Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or Brave.

It is also non-custodial, meaning you have full control of your funds. Moreover, MetaMask has a security vault that keeps your identity secure, allowing the end-user to interact with Ethereum from different browsers and sign off transactions.

How can I install MetaMask on my Chrome browser?

  1. Visit MetaMask’s official site and select your download option (Chrome, iOS, or Android app). Head to Chrome’s official store, and click “Get Chrome Extension.”
  2. Follow the link, click “Add to Chrome” to add the extension, and install the MetaMask plugin. Once ready, you will be redirected to a new tab.
  3. To get started, you can either “Import Wallet”—which applies to those who had MetaMask wallets before, or “Create Wallet” for those who want to create a new wallet. To create a new one, click on this button.
  4. On the “Help Us Improve MetaMask”, click on agree to grant permission to MetaMask.
  5. Create a new password.
  6. Next, back up your seed phrases. You’ll use these phrases to recover your wallet in case of loss. Jot down these keywords on a piece of paper, and store them safely.
  7. Click “All Done” to conclude the process.

How can I transfer funds to my Metamask wallet?

To receive funds from an external account, click “Receive” on the main window. You can copy your public address or scan the QR code to start the transaction. You can also connect your MetaMask to a hard wallet like Ledger or to another web or desktop wallet.

With a MetaMask blockchain wallet, you can also deposit or receive ETH to or from any Ethereum dapp from the comfort of your browser.

Now if you don’t own any cryptocurrencies yet and want to get started, you can buy your own tokens using real-world money in MetaMask. Either by paying with your Visa or Mastercard credit and debit cards, making a bank transfer, or using PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

Beyond a crypto wallet: MetaMask DeFi tools

Being around the crypto space since its early days, MetaMask had to evolve from a simple wallet to a multi-tool DeFi dapp. Take a look at the main things you can do with MetaMask.

MetaMask Portfolio

MetaMask Portfolio dapp is a companion dashboard that brings all your accounts and assets together in one place. You can connect up to 10 MetaMask accounts – including hardware wallets like Ledger – and see your total balances across multiple networks at a glance. Tokens and NFTs are displayed with real-time values, making it easy to track performance and manage your holdings.

The Portfolio dapp isn’t just for viewing – it’s also a hub for action. From the same interface you can buy crypto with fiat (via cards, bank transfers, or PayPal), swap tokens and bridge assets across chains, and even stake ETH (and MATIC for non-US users) to earn rewards. External exchange accounts can also be linked, so you have a full picture of your Web3 activity.

Portfolio acts as your multi-chain control center. Whether you’re tracking NFTs, moving assets across networks, or staking for yield, it puts everything into a clean and simple dashboard.

MetaMask Swap

Launched in 2020, MetaMask Swap lets you exchange one cryptocurrency for another directly from your wallet. It’s available on both desktop and mobile and aggregates quotes from dozens of DEXs to ensure competitive pricing.

As of September 2025, Swap works across around 10 blockchains – including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, zkSync Era, Linea, and Base – and supports thousands of tokens, from majors like ETH and USDC to smaller assets.

You can even bridge and swap in one step, for example, moving ETH on Ethereum to SOL on Solana. With Smart Transactions enabled, MetaMask reports a success rate of nearly 99.99%, making Swap one of its most reliable and powerful features.

MetaMask Bridge

MetaMask Bridge makes it easy to move tokens across blockchains without leaving your wallet. Instead of visiting a separate bridge site, you simply use the Swap interface: choose your source and destination networks, pick the token, and MetaMask handles the transfer behind the scenes. The feature aggregates several trusted bridging protocols to find the best route, showing you the full fee breakdown and estimated time before you confirm.

The built-in bridge supports all major L1s and L2s available in MetaMask – Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, BNB Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, zkSync Era, Linea, and Base – with more networks being added.

MetaMask charges a flat 0.875% fee on bridge transfers, plus the usual gas fees. To make onboarding smoother, it also includes a “refuel” option that automatically adds a small amount of the destination chain’s native token, so you’ll have gas ready to use as soon as your funds arrive.

MetaMask Staking

MetaMask added staking in 2023, giving users a simple way to earn rewards directly through the wallet. The feature is available in the Portfolio dapp under the “Stake” tab and currently supports ETH (with MATIC staking also available for non-US users).

You can choose between different staking options:

  • MetaMask Pool (pooled staking): Stake any amount of ETH – no 32-ETH minimum required. Even small amounts (like 0.1 ETH) can earn rewards, which accrue daily and can be withdrawn after Ethereum’s normal unstake period. MetaMask charges a 15% fee on rewards.
  • Validator staking: For larger holders (32–2048 ETH), MetaMask lets you run a dedicated validator node through its interface. This option avoids the MetaMask fee but requires locking a significant amount of ETH.
  • Liquid staking: MetaMask also integrates with providers like Lido and Rocket Pool, so you can stake ETH and receive stETH or rETH directly in your wallet.

The staking dashboard makes it easy to track your balance and rewards, and the process is straightforward – select a provider, enter the amount, and confirm.

What to know about the MetaMask token

A MetaMask token has been rumored for years, and in September 2025 ConsenSys founder Joe Lubin finally confirmed it: the long-awaited MASK token is coming – “possibly sooner than you would expect.” While exact details haven’t been published, the goal is to decentralize parts of MetaMask’s ecosystem and create new incentives for users and developers. Early hints suggest MASK could follow a structure similar to Linea’s launch, with only a small share going to ConsenSys and most allocated to governance, ecosystem grants, and community rewards.

Many in the Web3 space expect an airdrop, and based on past examples (like Uniswap and Linea), the most active MetaMask users are likely to be prioritized. That means swaps, bridges, staking, and dapp interactions through MetaMask could all improve eligibility.

For now, nothing is guaranteed, but the common advice is simple: use MetaMask actively. Make transactions, hold assets, and explore its DeFi tools. Following MetaMask’s official announcements and participating in any governance or testnets could also increase your chances.

Still, expectations should be realistic – depending on the token’s valuation, some airdrops might end up relatively small.
